The resort

Soneva Fushi is located on the island of Kunfunadhoo in Baa Atoll, one of the largest islands in the Maldives.  Baa Atoll was designated a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve in June 2011. Covering about 139,700 ha of coastal/marine areas, this site is a showcase of the Maldives’ wide diversity of reef animals, corals, marine turtles, fish, manta rays and whale sharks.  A scenic 30 minute seaplane flight direct from Malé International Airport takes you to the resort or a 20 minute domestic flight to Dharavandhoo followed by a 12 minute speedboat ride.

The resort’s down-to-earth personality is reflected in its nature-inspired architecture. If the experiences are magical, the philosophy is simple – no news, no shoes.

On the way to the resort , our footwear are tucked away in a cloth bag as we sped towards the island on the resort speed boat. It is then delivered to our villa together with our luggage. The next time we do put on our footwear, is when we were checking out.

Beach Villa

Our villa for the stay – the Crusoe Suite with pool. At 594m², it accorded us with loads of space and privacy. At Soneva Fushi, there is no water villa as it is the resort owners’ philosophy of preserving the atoll original condition with minimal impact on the ecology.

The rustic Robinson Crusoe concept are the hallmark of Soneva resorts. Soneva Fushi was the first ‘castaway’ resort in the Maldives, pioneering a trend for back-to-nature luxury holidays.

The villa living room. The TV, concealed in the box designed like a traveler’s luggage, does not have cable channels. But a DVD player with a selection of movies are in place in case guests need some entertainment, which is rarely so as there are plenty of nicer distractions, like star gazing or soaking in the villa pool.

The pantry, fully stocked with beverages and snacks . But what I really like are the little thoughtful touches here and there, like the complimentary bottled still and sparkling drinking water produced on the island. Never go thirsty at a Soneva resort .

Spacious outdoor bath with equally huge sunken bathtub. Certainly makes shower time an enjoyable affair and even an adventure too, at the outdoor bath among the lush greenery.

Resort activities

Eco-friendly, low-carbon footprint activities are the hallmark of the resort. At the Maldives, there is plenty to do within the natural blessings of the seas and land. The following video aptly carries that Soneva feel.

Dolphin cruise

On the way to our sunset dolphin cruise. Canapes, wine, fruit punch are handed out generously during the cruise. Definitely the most luxurious and enjoyable dolphin cruise I have been to date.

Snorkeling with Marine Biologist

Knowledgeable and passionate marine biologist Margaret, pointing out interesting marine life to us on a snorkeling trip. It was supposed to be a manta ray spotting trip but nature being what it is,  we were not able to see any. But the informative sharing session certainly let us know the marine life better.

Large table-sized fish , a Snapper, at the reefs around the resort. The hard corals in Maldives, like in other countries, experienced bleaching due to global warming. But thanks to the eco-sustainability stance of the government and the banning of trawling fishing technique, have resulted in quicker recovery of the coral reef systems.

Chill out at seafront bar

At the resort sea fronting beach bar, certainly one of the most scenic and relaxing place for a drink. Perfect for star gazing as you lie at the cushioned netting or loungers and let the sea breeze work its magical comfort.

A canape comes with the drinks at the sea front watering hole, with style.

Gorgeous venue to witness the retiring of a lovely day and start to a beautiful night.

Epicurean experience

Dining at Soneva resorts always have that special feel. It might just be a usual Japanese sushi meal held at the jetty after our dolphin sunset cruise but with a singer serenading with her lovely vocals, the evening takes on different vibes. This was a special dining concept aptly named Food Journey, where guests dine as they walk along forest path at a few food stations set up from the jetty to the main dining area.

Nectarine vocals provided a lovely warm ambience to the stand-up dégustation session. Not recorded music but real human voice.  This is Soneva’s attention to details. 

Wangyu beef skewers, cooked ala minute for all to enjoy. With the BBQ aroma wafting through the air, we are set up for dinner ahead, no appetizer needed.

You know you are in for a real treat when an award-winning chef attends to you. Sobah, who is the resort Sous Chef, competed with 500 other chefs, some local but most of them foreign chefs from resort islands across Maldives.  His awards included Faculty of Hospitality and Management Chef 2015, Hot Cooking Lamb Gold, Faculty of Hospitality and Management Best Maldivian Chef and World Association of Chefs Societies (WACS).

A game station set up to provide some light entertainment for guests. And as you can see, it’s all low-carbon and earth friendly activities.

By the time we arrived at the main dining area, we were almost too full to eat anymore. But who can say no to BBQ seafood cooked with tender loving care ?

Grab your own dinner @ Fresh In The Garden

Surrounded by banana trees, this restaurant without walls rises above the resort herb and vegetable garden.  Diners get to enjoy a long, leisurely meal of Mediterranean-inspired dishes, prepared with freshly plucked produce from the surroundings.

Fresh herbs and vegetables all for the picking. This restaurant was included in UK Telegraph “Incredible Outdoor Restaurants” worldwide.

Perhaps a glass of healthy drink with organically-grown wheatgrass for you ?

Let your kids loose @ The Den

Couples with children are well taken care of at The Den. They can entrust their children to the childminders at the Den, and perhaps catch a scuba diving session or two.

Lego bricks all ready for children creativity to run wild. The bricks are “strewn” on the table after feedback from the kids, who preferred the “mess”. Children rules at the Den.

The children movie room. Simply an amazing kids zone with comfortable cushion and bean bags.

The sleeping room, specially designed for children needing that afternoon nap. With built-in drawers to store their toy and belongings.

Rediscover yourself @ Soneva

The wide expense of the Kunfunadhoo Atoll lets guests luxuriate in her lush surrounding. A resort that is peaceful, serene and not commercialized. Allowing me to recharge and rediscover myself.

Coming from highly urbanised Singapore, where motorised transportation are the order of the day, it was a refreshing experience go human-pedal power when exploring the atoll. Bringing back childhood memories, as that was the last time I rode a tricycle.

Conclusion

A stay at Soneva Resorts is more than a vacation. It is a trip of a lifetime. Memories that will linger on for a long, long time. The impeccable service, ambience, culinary treats and activities are all finely crafted for a unique experience quite unlikely to be replicated elsewhere. The activities mentioned above is just a few available as my stay was just a short one. Many visitors to the Maldives frequently advised staying beyond three days as they will “run out of things to do”. I am very sure they have yet to discover Soneva resorts.

The Amazing Resort

This beautiful resort is located on Kihavah Huravalhi Island, Baa Atoll , west of the Maldives atoll chain which is made up of 75 tropical islands. In June 2011, Baa Atoll was designated a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, placing it in the hall of fame sites such as Komodo island in Indonesia, Uluru (Ayer’s Rock) in Australia and the Galápagos Islands. With only 13 of the islands inhabited and a population of 11,000 , this resort is well placed in a secluded and exclusive location.

The Over Water Villa

While most resorts looked somewhat similar in layout and design from afar, the quality of materials used and furnishings become apparent upon checking in. It’s what distinguish resorts and exude that ‘feel good’ and “wow” factors. Anantara group of resorts worldwide have always scored high consistently and that finesse is right here too, if not better.

My accommodation for the stay – an Over Water Pool Villa. With almost 260 sg.m of living space, you will feel at one with the wide expanse of the Maldivian tropical paradise. Fully furnished with any creature comfort you will need and more. I slept like a baby cradled in supreme comfort as the calming waves slushed underneath the villa each night.

The resort have 79 spacious villas, ranging from 260 to 2,730 square meters catering to couples or families, either poised over the water with sweeping ocean views or nestled along a pristine stretch of private beach.

The villa dining pavilion, looking out into the picturesque Baa Atoll. You can lounge on the deck netting or Maldivian swing bed. Either way, you wish time stands still here. You can also do skinny dipping in the sea in full privacy, as the human density is very low.

The bathtub with transparent base looking into the reef beneath the villa and view of surrounding islands as far as the eyes can see. This is “bath decadence” at its best.

The tastefully laid out villa shower and restroom area alone is bigger than a lot of city hotels room anywhere worldwide. There’s also an outdoor shower, perfect for getting refreshed under the Milky Way and night skies.

The villa private swimming pool. You will be spoilt for choices for a dip. Personally the shallow beach right in front at the villa is perfect for day swim while the pool is ideal when it gets too dark at night.

Each villa comes equipped with bicycles so that you ride around the island. Perfect for a bit of exercise and saving on carbon footprint in the process. But buggy transport is provided upon short notice if you prefer.

One of the best things to do in Maldives is nothing. Simply enjoy the peaceful scenic blue sea on the breezy Maldivian swinging bed is already a joy of life.

One of the best activities to do at night is stargazing. With the lack of light pollution, the constellations, Milky Way and tons of stars will enthrall especially city folks. Even shooting stars and orbiting satellites can be spotted. The resort also conducts pre-dinner stargazing session for guests, expounding some of the starry secrets at it’s stargazing deck.

The resort ground

Being the 1st operator in the Maldives to be Green Globe Certified highlights Anantara’s sincere commitment to operating in an environmentally, socially and culturally responsible manner through a broad spectrum of initiatives. The resort are fully designed with sustainability and low-carbon footprint in mind.

Most resorts in Maldives have a swing built over water which makes for that idyllic “Instagrammable” moment. You can swing high and splash into the water for that unique picture.

Dusk at Maldives are simply gorgeous. End of a beautiful day, start of an enchanting night.

Most resorts in Maldives charges higher rates for villas with sunset view. There is a reason for this.

You could lounge at your own villa sundeck but there’s plenty more loungers around the resort so guests can choose the ambience and view they desire.

The resort main food and beverage hub. An absolutely lovely place to chill. But it’s usually quiet outside meals time as guests are either enjoying the Maldivian magic from their villas, out on scuba diving trips, doing yoga or many other activities.

The resort various decor theme are inspired by nature around them. Certainly a fitting tribute to the awesome beauty that surrounds the Baa Atoll.

The vegetation at the atoll is not limited to just coconut palms or marine hardy plants. The gardening staff have fabulous green fingers in cultivating tropical flowers like orchids which beautify the resort landscaping.

The fabulous Gastronomic Experience

Complementing the beautiful Maldivian ambience are the equally exquisite dining option.  So aptly described in the resort website “Sea.Fire.Salt.Sky –A one-of-a-kind over and underwater dining experience. From a mythical escape into the depths of the ocean to reaching for the sky at the rooftop bar, the Indian Ocean unfolds before your eyes in four different ways.” You know you are in for a gastronomic treat.

The resort’s spectacular SEA Underwater Restaurant. As part of the resort’s signature dining concept, the dining experience here was so magical, that it could very well be the key reason for choosing this resort over others. Definitely a culinary highlight anywhere in the whole of Maldives, in my humble opinion.

Lunch under the sea at Sea is an absolute MUST! Best reserve a table during resort reservation and turn up slightly earlier before opening hours to ensure a good table. Lunch is unhurried and drawn out so that you can enjoy the reef fish swimming all around. Each table has a book of Maldivian reef fish on it so you can better put a name to the fish you spot swimming right across. WiFi is not available at this underwater venue, so guest can better savour the view and meal.

A gastronomic experience must be accompanied by great wines. For wine connoisseurs, even novices, will be well served by the resident sommelier, who will complement the meal with fabulous vintages or house pour.

My Wangyu beef tenderloin paired with Chardonnay by the resident sommelier hits the spot. It’s like the beautiful reef out there, with all flavour and texture swimmingly good. Felt like in heaven already.

The attention to details and presentation made the dining experience that much more memorable. My leek and potato puree soup with black truffle and quail egg was simply out of this world.

Dining by the pool and under the stars at Manzaru, the resort Italian restaurant. As always, the gorgeous Maldivian skies beautified the ambience for a romantic dinner. The diner’s attentive butlers up the experience with their polished service and engaging diners with light conversation.

Tasting local food is one highlights at the resort. My fave was the Maldivian Curry with steamed rice and freshly fried papadum. And the wide range of dishes on the Plates restaurant buffet line was over the top. With such a wide variety of dishes, i wished had a few stomachs. Good food, great scenery..it was a great start to the day.

At the resort Fire Restaurant, built with a dome ceiling reaching for the sky, the atmosphere is communal and theatrical with a chef who occasionally invites the guests to flip an egg and catch it mid-air around the teppanyaki hotplate. Certainly an “egg-citing” experience.

The gorgeous House Reef

Although the atolls in Maldives are generally festooned with beautiful coral reefs , not all resorts in Maldives are blessed with great house reef. Those resorts that do not have good reefs will usually provide guests with short boat ride to nearby reef for snorkeling. But at Anantara Kihavah, I am please to say I experienced one of the best looking house reef, within just a stone throw from shore.

The amazing house reef by the SEA underwater restaurant. Although man-assembled, this beautiful reef is blossoming and teeming with marine life with healthy soft corals and giant clams. The Maldivian government practices of banning trawling and allowing only line fishing helped in part to maintained a balanced eco-system and helped the reefs recover faster from massive coral bleaching that is afflicting coral reefs worldwide.

The lovely hard corals are healthy and act as a nursery for fishes to breed and survive better. Soft corals like anemones are less frequently spotted at the shallower depth, compared to reefs at countries like Malaysia and Indonesia.

An Oriental Sweetlip sharing a harbourage with Butterffly, Squirrel and Hawk Fish among lovely red sponges , all at 5 ft depth with 20m visibilty. It like swimming in a giant aquarium.

A small school of Powder Blue Surgeon Fish nibbling on algae at hard corals. This helps in grooming the hard corals, keeping the eco-system equilibrium in check.

The Rejuvenating Anantara Spa

If relaxing on powdery white sands and swimming in the azure waters aren’t sufficient to eat away your worldly woes, the resort professional wellness spa therapists will certainly helped guests ‘reset’ bodily and mentally.

6 over-water treatment suites are available at the resort to lavish attention on guests by professional therapists. Each treatment room is in its own over water bungalow with glass windows on the floor to watch the reef fish swim while enjoying a variety of treatments. But honestly, while the transparent glass window is a nice touch, I usually go into deep slumber the minute the expert masseur does her magic.

The resort spa earth-friendly wellness products are available for purchase. Perfect as gifts for friends when returning home. But I suspect you will want to keep it for yourself. It’s just too good to give away.

The inner sanctum of tranquility at the resort. You wish the clock slows down and be pampered forever, elevating your sensory pleasures beyond beautiful reef fishes and delicious food.

The impeccable service and friendly staff

Central to any good travel experience is the service you received during a vacation. At Maldives resorts, as most if not all, the time are spent at the resort, the trip enjoyment level is heavily centered on service. And I am please to say the Anantara group has lived up to it’s reputation. From arrival to departure, everything was perfect. We were assigned a personal butler for the entire stay, who attended to our every need. We were given a mobile phone with direct link to him so that any request for assistance or info are answered promptly within three rings.

Our butler, named Knaif, ferrying us to our villa after being greeted with cold towels and chilled drinks upon arrival. And from there, did an orientation to the spacious villa so that we know where the switches are located and how to work the essential appliances. Check-in was seamless, smooth and very pleasant, so that we can start enjoying the lovely resort immediately.

We didn’t need to trouble our butler much, for what more would you need in paradise?. Throughout our trip, the service request to our butler was basically for buggy transport and departure arrangement. Although each villa is provided with bicycles for personal mobility, I was not comfortable riding bicycle as the last time I rode one was a few decades ago. What more balancing photographic gears and myself on the wooden boardwalk may be see me falling straight into the gin clear water. Not a comfortable thought may I add.

The restaurant kitchen staff were absolutely fun and spontaneous. My request to grab a picture of them while they are cooking resulted in a group shoot, all within 10 seconds.

Getting to the resort

Overseas visitors to the Maldives land at Velana International Airport (previously known as Ibrahim Nasir International Airport) , the country main international airport. From the moment we cleared passport control, the resort’s representative will be on hand to meet and escort us via air-conditioned coach to the sea plane terminal (just a few minutes away) where the resort maintains a sleek and comfortable lounge overlooking the seaplane berth.

The lounge has restroom facility, complimentary WiFi, snacks and beverages for waiting guests from different flights as the seaplanes are readied for the transfer to the island resorts.

The seaplanes used are typically 18-seater DeHavilland Twin Otter. Space in the cabin can be limited and is not air-conditioned. But the 40min flight (USD300 per person , per way) on the way to the resort offers an amazing view on the atolls, islands, reefs and lagoons.

Enroute to the resort, you will get to see history in the making – Maldives’ new runway. The international is undergoing massive upgrading and expansion to cater to ever increasing tourists arrival.  The current world’s largest airliner A380 will be able to land on the new runway.

Arrival at Anantara Kihavah resort, the floating platform is situated a short distance away from the resort to minimise aircraft noise from disturbing the serenity of the resort and guests enjoyment. A speed boat will then whisk guests to the resort just under a minute away.

Conclusion

Some good information information to know before you go. Over water pool villas at Anantara Kihavah Maldives Villas start at about S$2000 per night. There is a mandatory sea plane transfer fee of about S$420/per way per person.  As sea planes do not operate after dark, an overnight stay at Malé is required if you arrive at the city in the late afternoon or evening. For the perpetually internet-wired up visitors, heave a sigh of relief as WiFi connectivity is provided with compliments on the island. The resort has many other activities apart from those mentioned in the travelogue. A minimum of 3 nights stay onward is advised for a well-rounded experience at this spectacular resort. So does this resort lives up to it’s acclaimed brand name ? I certainly think so as memories of moments at this lovely resort still linger vividly after the trip. While it may not have the chic factor of some other newer higher-end resorts, this resort charms in her own unique ways.

The resort

Located on the island of Machchafushi, Alif Dhaal Atoll, this 112 villas and suites resort opened in late 2009 and is one of 3 Centara properties in Maldives. The resort was voted Maldives’ most family-friendly resort two years in succession and has a wealth of activities and superb facilities that makes this resort an ideal hideaway for couples , honeymooners, or families. Of key interest to vacationers would be the resort’s “ultimate All-Inclusive’ package” that provides for everything you could desire, from diving to dining, spa to excursions, and everything in between including champagne breakfasts and sunset cruises.

Getting there

Centara Grand Island Resort and Spa Maldives is 97.4km from Malé Velana International Airport. It can be accessed via a 25min direct sea plane transfer (during daylight) or a 20min domestic  flight to Maamigili airport followed by a 15min speedboat transfer (evening hours). .

The opportunity to view the amazing Maldivian scenery is one of the perks of seaplane transfer. The ride in the cramped cabin may not be that comfortable but it makes up for it by saving up on precious vacation time.

Accommodation

Our accommodation, the Beach Suite. Spacious at 935 sg.ft with relaxing living room, a king bed on the mezzanine level and an spacious bathroom with an outdoor shower. Comes with complimentary wireless internet access, flat-screen TVs with international channels and in-room movies, DVD player, IDD telephone line, air-conditioning, ceiling fan, free minibar items, tea and coffee making facilities, in-room safe and a hairdryer.

Pathway to the Deluxe Water Villa.  Set on the northern side of the island, these spacious (925 sg.ft) come with soothing décor of white with splashes of colour, rattan and hardwood furnishings. Its terrace faces the endless horizon and guests can swim or go snorkeling in the lagoon.

Bath amenities of the Sunset Ocean Pool Villa. Functionality and aesthetics are both woven into the gorgeous room throughout.

The Sunset Ocean Pool Villa (1183 sg.ft.) comes with a 129 sg.ft  plunge pool looking across the ocean. Guests can snorkel only a few steps down from the terrace. These villas on the western end of the island boast sublime sunset views and feature a terrace for lounging and basking in the sun, a sea-gazing bedroom.

The Ocean Water Villa are newly refurbished villas set on the western end of the island. Each villa has a spacious terrace for lounging and basking in the sun, a sea-gazing bedroom and steps that lead directly into the lagoon.  Spacious 1,183 sg.ft of living area, including an outdoor terrace where chefs can prepare a private dinner, roomy bedroom with high ceilings and dominated by soothing whites, rattan and hardwood furnishings.

Guest can simply lounge on the netting on the terrace edge and plan their next dream vacation to Maldives.

Gastronomic adventure at the resort

Guests who took up the resort Ultimate All-Inclusive package will find their stay enhanced and absolutely carefree. All meals are included. Sumptuous champagne breakfasts are available through mid-morning at Reef Restaurant, lunches and dinners are to be enjoyed at the Azurri Mare Italian Restaurant, the Suan Bua Thai restaurant or Reef Restaurant, and selected beverages are served from 10am until midnight . Guest can even savour daily afternoon teas and sundowner parties!

The teppan yaki at the Reef restaurant is available to guests on the all-inclusive package, but seating at this meal is subject to advance reservation.

Superb seafood feast at the Azzuri Mare, a 55-seats Italian and seafood restaurant. The fresh catch of the day prepared Italian style, along with Italian signature dishes and flavour-filled pastas and pizza, with its beautiful views across the lagoon. The restaurant provides plenty of visual action with its open kitchen, and the a la carte menu and set menus feature vegetarian options.  Couples and families alike will love this diner for its gorgeous ambience.

You can trust the chef’s culinary skill at the resort, and the seafood can’t get any fresher. Trust me.

What you can do

There is so many things that guests can choose from land to sea-based activities, from fast to slow paced or simply doing nothing. That’s the beauty of vacation at the Maldives, even lounging at the swimming pool and taking in the amazing scenery makes it all worthwhile. But to maximize on the resort offerings, its highly advisable to observe the events timing so that you do not “miss the boat”.

One of the highlights of the resort would be the fish feeding session daily between 6.00-6.20pm near the resort house reef. Huge stingrays, sharks, moral eels, etc, all appear out of no where. Not quite a uncontrolled feeding frenzy but definitely an eye-opening experience for those who only seen such lovely marine creatures on television.

The huge stingrays all displayed very enthusiast feeding behaviour, thrashing out of the water at times to secure the food.

The resort house reef is one the places that even non-avid snorkelers will spend a great deal of time. The healthy house reefs have various structures built-in to provide a safe breeding ground for fishes. And this shows through the abundance of marine life at the site.

It can get somewhat crowded at the reef sometimes. But that’s a happy problem.

The resort spa, Cenvaree, has professional masseurs that are well trained by the resort headquarter. I vouch that I had my best Swedish and Shiatsu massage ever right here.

Guests can simply slow down and luxuriate among the many chill out spots throughout the resort. Do something or do nothing, that’s the way to go.

For avid stargazers, the unpolluted night skies of the Maldives Atolls presents plenty opportunities to spot the Milky Way and constellation. Or perhaps practise star trails photography?

A final word

A visit to Maldives is never complete without experiencing the wonders of the underwater world. The land scenery view was breathtaking but do trade in your sunglasses for a snorkel mask and take a peek into the world beneath. This is where the real magic of the Maldives is. And this resort with its house reef teeming with vibrant marine life, certainly perked up the overall trip experience. Sure, we did not not manage to spot the “big guy” during the Whale Shark snorkeling session but it’s still a pleasurable stay at this cosy and homely resort. If I do visit the Maldives again, i will make sure to make a date with my underwater friends at the house reef.

Having last visited the Maldives some 15 years back, I was truly excited when the opportunity to go on a site inspection to a few resorts with Jetabout Holidays came in March.  The first resort on the trip was Lux* South Ari Atoll. It may just be a couple of days at this fabulous resort but I can assure anyone looking for a luxurious Maldivian vacation that they will be very delighted if they chose this resort.

The resort

Formerly known as the Lux* Maldives, (they have a new property opening in the North Ari Atoll in late 2017) this resort is located on the picture-perfect island of Dhidhoofinolhu. Relaunched after a complete refurbishment in September 2016, guests have the choice of 193 private villas dotted at the water’s edge along 4 km of powder fine beaches and perched on stilts above a crystal clear lagoon. With 4km of sandy beaches around the atoll, this resort is large compared to other resorts. You can stroll around the lovely island but you also have the option to ride on electric buggies that ply the resort like a ‘public transport’ system. You can wait at any pick up point with no more than 15min for the next buggy or simply hop on a buggy along the way if its route agrees with you. We did not rent the bicycles (for a nominal fee of USD5) as we felt well served by the buggy. You might be pleased to know that all drivers of buggy undergo training to receive certification before being permitted to operate the vehicle. All in the name of safety in paradise.

The resort is superbly maintained by about 600 courteous and helpful staff, who goes about their task around the island adhering to the island eco-friendly stance. I believe the staff in the picture below is “housekeeping on wheels”.  Low carbon footprint activities are etched into the DNA of the island.

Getting there

Lux* South Ari Atoll is 104km from Malé Velana International Airport. It can be accessed via a 25min direct seaplane transfer (during daylight) or a 20min domestic flight to Maamigili airport followed by a 10min speedboat transfer (evening hours).

Arriving guests will immediately feel the warm welcome of the resort when they disembarked the seaplane. The fatigue of a long journey is replaced by a sense of excitement as the staff lined up at the resort jetty to receive the guests. For arrival after dark hours, a staff will also be stationed to receive the guests. Either way, you are in good hands.

A seaplane taxiing to the resort jetty pontoon. Maldives is essentially served by one aerial transfer company after the merger of two firms. The time of the transfer depends on how the links are organized by the company. Waiting time before departure could be as short as half an hour or sometimes even up to two hours. This waiting time could be extended in case of inclement weather or delays along various pickup points along the flight routes. The seaplane flies only during daylight. But travel via the seaplane is still a favourable option as it provides passengers with a bird’s eyes view of the beautiful atolls in the clear blue sea. Passengers also get to rest in the company comfortable lounge while waiting for their transfer.

Cold towels are offered to guests upon arrival at the resort. And the staff will handle your luggage and have it whisked away to your villa directly. Check-in is smooth and seamless to ease the start of a great vacation.

The crystal clear water are so inviting that you feel like jumping in right away. That’s the magic of the Maldives. And this surreal feeling of being in a tropical paradise is what accompanies the visitor throughout the trip, enhanced by the resort offerings and ambience along the way.

Accommodation

Magnificent sleep quality at the spacious Beach Villa (1021 sg.ft) which offers beautiful sea view and just steps away to the beach and lagoon. The king-sized bed are supremely comfy and the room layout is very well thought out. There is also a LED TV which I did not use a single bit throughout the stay as the scenery are just too lovely to pass up. WiFi is free and accessible throughout the resort.

The washing area is very thoughtfully designed and superb especially for a family with 2 kids. Double sinks reduce waiting time, especially during the morning.

Generously sized bath tub. Perfect for couples or a family with 2 young children.

A sweet start to the new day with macaroons, chocolates and tea before heading out for breakfast. You wished time stands still.

Among the rooms we were shown during the inspection was the resort Romantic Pool Water Villa. With 1183 sg.ft of breezy space looking out into the blue yonder. If this isn’t romantic, I don’t know what is.

With all that creature comforts at the Romantic Pool Villa patio, you wished you had booked a longer stay. By sunset, the scene gets even more romantic.

At the Water Villa, the 1054 sg.ft of space felt even larger, with an unblocked view of the ocean. There is no pool in this type of room. But you get to enjoy the “world’s biggest pool” just steps away down the staircase. It can’t get better than this.

You could just lounge here for a big part of the morning, afternoon or night. At nightfall, you can also stargaze here and check out the various constellation.

Some facilities at the resort

Noticed I stated above as ‘some’ facilities at the resort. As our inspection spanned just a couple of days, I was hard pressed to thoroughly turn the resort inside-out. But from what I have seen, is enough to enamour me to go slow and appreciate it better. Like the picturesque 130 seats restaurant call East Market (see below), where we had breakfast. This diner offers guests a culinary tour of South East Asia and may I add, the chefs were just perfect.

And of course, what is a resort without great spa facilities? The resort spa – Lux* Me WellBeing.  There are 15 exclusive spa villas including 4 water treatment villas, which you see in the picture below. Common relaxation area with sauna and steam bath, plunge pools, spa products boutique, showers and changing rooms with separate sauna and steam bath for ladies and gentlemen. There is even a unisex hair salon.

At the East Bar (50s seats, built over water),  perfect place that will quench any thirst from the Maldivian sun.

Directly opposite the East Bar, the Lagoon Bar with colourful bean bags on the beach let guests chill out in total relaxation. The entire resort is relaxing, it’s only which area is more relaxing.

An epicurean adventure

For all lover of good food out there, Lux* 7 eateries will definitely satisfy your food cravings. The resort offers several options from pizzas and bar snacks to all-day dining to romantic candlelit dinners on the beach. The choices of cuisine were also diverse including International, Asian and Mediterranean. Guests who took up all-inclusive food and beverage package are entitled to their pick of all of the restaurants except for the Japanese restaurant and in-villa dining. We did not get to experience all the 7 eateries during the inspection due to time schedule but from those that we had tried, the epicurean adventure at this resort is guaranteed to thrill, excite and satiate.

East Market– offering a culinary tour of South East Asia

Umami – Tastes of modern Japanese dining. We did not dine at this restaurant but I am sure it’s definitely up there with the best.

At Cafe Lux* right at the resort lobby, enjoy a wide range of signature coffee prepared by a barista with in-house roasted coffee beans. I like what the resort described – “excellent coffee is a must, not a luxury; that’s why you’ll find a Café LUX* at the heart of LUX* South Ari Atoll”. Talk about commitment to caffeine lovers!

Beach Rouge – Beach Club and Restaurant offering contemporary cuisines in a chic and hip ambience.

Even the delicious food at the Beach Rogue makes for a photogenic food photo. Thanks, chef, for doing a great job!

Unique features

“Design and Atomsphere” said the Lux* South Ari Atoll press release. ” LUX* South Ari Atoll remains faithful to its promise of staying away from the sea of sameness, banishing thoughtless patterns hence creating something extraordinary.” And may I add, the resort certainly achieved their goals. Like this quirky and fun unisex washroom located at the Beach Rouge restaurant. Since when did you really had a fun time in a washroom?

This is a washroom? I thought I was in an art boutique.

Slick and chic are what comes to mind.

Located near the Umami Japanese restaurant, this themed unisex washroom was another amazing “out of the box” creation. Like what the Japanese always exclaim “Sugoi !”

Did someone need help up there? Hello?

Feeling homesick? need to phone home? Yes, guests are entitled to a 30min complimentary international phone call daily from this London phone booth replica. I have this notion coming to this lovely paradise is to get away from it all. We would rather be trying to avoid any phone calls. But when the need arises, you know you can use the phone. A really wonderful touch here.

In paradise but still had book addict withdrawal syndrome? no worries, there is a beautiful library with loft to fulfil that intellectual hunger pangs.

What you can do

Whale Shark watching is one of the highlights at the Maldives and this resort is fortunate to be located in the prime spot to observe these gentle giants. Their “snorkel with Whale Shark” excursions are conducted by the resort’s Marine Biology Center and offers participants a unique money back guarantee – “if you don’t see one, you don’t pay”. (Every Saturday, weather permitting) . We didn’t get to see the mammoth shark as they seemed to be somewhere on vacation. So we had a snorkelling session at the house reef just 10min away from the resort. Beside this, there also many other activities that you can do.

The skies were somewhat cloudy during the outing so it affected the underwater picture quality. The corals at the house reef are predominantly of the hard species. Marine life was abundant but overall, we would have enjoyed the snorkelling better had the weather improved. But that’s nature, we take what’s given.

While the day thrilled us with so many things to do, the night skies presented another activity which we are unable to do in our hometown well-lit urban landscape, that is, star gazing. We had a lovely time doing astrophotography and shooting star trails right outside our villa.

A final word

On hindsight, vacation are hard-earned event and deserves proper planning. There are many resorts in the Maldives , each with its unique features. With the rates of most luxury resort going at a premium, visitors should all the more do their homework. Lux* South Ari Atoll is modern, trendy and hits the spot, from the decor, to the styling and to the little touches. Everything was done with the guests in the mind.  The service we received at Lux* was excellent. From the time we were received at the jetty to the time we departed, we felt that we were in good hands. All of the staff were always helpful, smiling and courteous. This superlative service level makes it even more memorable for a long time to come.
